NOECON Excavation Services – San Jose, CA

What is excavation?

Excavation is best defined as the process of moving dirt, rocks and debris, usually with a backhoe or excavator. Other equipment, such as explosives are also options. Excavation can be accomplished by moving earth out of a hole, but also by excavating a trench or a tunnel. Excavation applications include exploration, mining and construction. Construction is the most common application for excavation. As a service Noecon offers, excavation is used as a construction process to establish building foundations and swimming pools. Occasionally, we also work on road construction and other commercial projects.

Excavation construction is used in every structure that uses a foundation. It is also used if there are any underground problems with plumbing, electric or gas. Once you have identified a problem and are ready to dig, we can help! Call us for your excavation needs!

Our excavation process

To prevent any hazardous outcomes to anyone involved in this work, NOECON takes safety measures by following OSHA’s guidelines. We start by pre-planning our work before we start. It is important for us to take each new job with the utmost care and preparation.

The next step OSHA standards require us to follow is to determine the location of utility installations and for safety measures. NOECON calls 811, the Underground Service Alert of Northern California (http://www.usanorth.org/) to bring in someone to locate installations such as sewer, telephone, fuel, electric, and water lines.

There are two steps that make up the excavation process; “cut” and “fill.” To cut is to excavate or dig, while “fill” is to do what the term implies. The former is done to lower the elevation of an area and the latter is to raise the elevation. After excavation is done, OSHA requires us to shore the walls of any trench that is at least 3 feet underground with a supporting post to prevent the walls of the trench from disintegrating. After these steps are performed, we carry out our project.

After the “fill-in” step is done, compaction must be followed in order to increase the density of the soil that is being used to fill in the hole. Compaction helps to reduce long-term settlement. After the area is compacted, we have to grade the area in order to create a slope that is away from any structures (house/building/etc.) in order to keep water away from your home in the future. Excavation projects are done primarily in conjunction with work performed on underground earthwork/utilities such as electrical conduit, sewage systems, water, gas, and drainage systems.
